90s goth fashion was five looks running side by side: romantic goth in velvet and lace, fed by the decade's vampire films; club goth in fishnet, PVC and black; mall goth, bought off the rail at the shopping centre; the teenage witch of The Craft; and the neon edge of cybergoth. To wear it now, pick one of those lines and build it from pieces you would wear on an ordinary Tuesday, rather than stacking every reference into a single outfit.
The decade matters because it is when goth stopped being a secret. The Museum of Youth Culture's essay on the scene, written by the Northumbria professor Claire Nally, traces goth from underground origins in the late 1970s to "a more commercial visibility in the 1990s". Films, records and shopping-centre chains each took the look further than the clubs had, and each route left its own uniform. Here are the five, what shaped each one, and the pieces from our shelves that get you there today, with sizes and prices.
Key Takeaways
- 90s goth split into at least five looks: romantic vampire, club, mall goth, teenage witch and cybergoth. Choose one per outfit.
- The romantic look sits beside the vampire films of 1992 and 1994. Start from velvet and a velvet choker.
- Club goth is fishnet over black with a high-shine faux leather skirt, and our skirt runs S to XXXL.
- Our mall goth is a graphic tee, black trousers with buckles and a studded chain choker. Above L, a plaid mini sold in XS to 5XL replaces the trousers.
- Our witch look, after The Craft (1996) and Practical Magic (1998), is a satin slip, long lace and one cross.
What did goths wear in the 90s?
Mostly black, in several textures at once. The Museum of Youth Culture's account of traditional goth lists long clothes in velvet and satin next to studded belts, fishnets, leather, PVC and latex, a mix it credits to goth's overlap with punk and fetish wear. Hair was dyed black or an artificial colour, backcombed or crimped, and make-up for men and women alike paled the skin and darkened the eyes and lips.
During the 1990s and 2000s that base spun off variants with their own names, cybergoth and mall goth among them. The Museum at FIT made the split visible in 2008 with Gothic: Dark Glamour, billed as the first exhibition devoted to gothic style in fashion. Its subcultural section set Victorian-style goth, industrial, steampunk and cyber-goth apart as distinct styles. Seen from 2026, the decade reads less like one trend than a family tree. One branch crosses goth with Western wear, and our gothic western style guide follows it.
Romantic vampire goth: velvet, lace and Anne Rice
The early 90s were rich years for the screen vampire. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Eiko Ishioka, and one of her costumes stood in the vampire section of that FIT exhibition sixteen years later. In 1994 Neil Jordan filmed Interview with the Vampire from Anne Rice's 1976 novel, and Rice's books had been drawing goth readers since the 1980s. On a person rather than a screen, that romance comes down to velvet, lace and something close around the throat.
The Velvet Grunge Long Sleeve Dress is black velvet and polyester with long sleeves and a fit-and-flare shape, 71 to 75 cm long depending on size, so it finishes above the knee. In S it costs $32.13, and in M and L $37.59. Wear it with opaque black tights and the boots you already walk in; our boots guide covers the independent makers if yours are finished.
At the neck, wear the Moondance velvet choker, a band of black velvet with metal detailing for $19.99. Keep the rest of your jewellery quiet so the velvet does the talking. For the longer, more literary side of this look, our romantic goth guide goes further into lace and the Victorian line.
Club goth: fishnet, PVC and The Crow
This is the look built for a dark room and a loud record. As a music scene, goth ran through the Sisters of Mercy, popular across the 1980s and 1990s, although their singer, Andrew Eldritch, rejects any association with goth. In 1993 Brooklyn's Type O Negative released Bloody Kisses, which went gold and then platinum. On 13 May 1994 The Crow was released with a soundtrack running from The Cure to Nine Inch Nails covering Joy Division's "Dead Souls", and Louder's history of the decade credits the film with carrying goth into the mainstream. The same year in England, a group of pen pals met in Whitby, the town Bram Stoker's Dracula made famous, and started what became Whitby Goth Weekend.
Start with Courtney's Gothic Fishnet Top, open fishnet in polyester and spandex with short sleeves, 40 to 42 cm long. S and M are $32.76 and L is $29.71. It is made to go over something: a black bra, a bodysuit or a plain vest. Below it, the Black PVC Leather Skirt is a high-shine PU faux leather pencil mini, 34 to 36.5 cm long and cut above the knee. It costs $31.37 in S and $36.71 in every size from M to XXXL.
Finish with Goth Alt Sheer Fishnets, semi-sheer stockings in stretch nylon mesh, one size, $19.99. If the fishnet top stops short of your size, the Black Goth Scene Bustier Top takes its place: a strapped, underwired bustier in PU, spandex and polyester that sits well over the same skirt, at $31.02 in S, $34.51 from M to 5XL and $32.76 in 6XL.
Mall goth: the 90s goth outfit you bought off the rail
Hot Topic opened its first shop in November 1989 at Montclair Plaza, a shopping centre in California, and mall goth is the name for the version of the look bought in places like it. Our take on it rests on three things: a graphic tee, black trousers with hardware, and a harder choker than the velvet one above.
The Ribcage Tee is an oversized, drop-shoulder waffle-knit cotton tee with a distressed x-ray ribcage print, $54.99 in S, M, L and XL. Tuck the front into the Grimmaximum Black Buckle Trouser, black trousers in polyester and cotton with buckle detail, 103 cm long in S up to 105 cm in L. They are $32.89 in S and $36.36 in M and L.
Put the metal at the neck. The stud choker with chains costs $19.99: a studded black band hung with draped chains, 30 to 44 cm around.
The trousers stop at L. From XL up, swap them for the Grunge Plaid Mini Skirt, a black-and-white plaid mini in polyester and spandex. It measures 39 to 41 cm long depending on size and costs $31.37 in XS and $36.71 in every size from S to 5XL. The tee and choker go with it unchanged.
The teenage witch: The Craft and Practical Magic
The Craft opened in May 1996: four outcast girls at a Los Angeles parochial high school who take up witchcraft for their own ends. Practical Magic followed in October 1998, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters, adapted from Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel. If those two films are how you came to 90s goth, you are close to what is now called whimsigoth, and our whimsigoth brands guide covers that softer end.
Our version of the darker one starts with the Lace Strap Satin Dress, a black satin slip in polyester and spandex with a V neck, sleeveless and above the knee. It is $29.71 in S and $32.76 in M and L. Over a fitted black T-shirt it is daywear; with bare arms and a coat it is evening.
For the long line, the Gothic Lace Skirt comes in three lengths, and the 80 cm one is the one to buy for this look. Made of polyester lace on a stretch waist, the 80 cm length costs $33.06 in M, L and XL. The lace is see-through in the listing photographs, so plan a slip or opaque tights underneath.
One cross is enough. For $23.99, the Melted Cross Earrings are silver huggie hoops with a drip-edged cross in deep red enamel. If you want to take the witch further than one outfit, our guide to building a witchy outfit goes piece by piece.
Industrial and cybergoth: the part of the 90s we do not stock
The harder edge of the decade came through industrial music. Louder counts Nine Inch Nails' 1989 album Pretty Hate Machine, which went on to platinum, among the records that set the stage for the decade. Cybergoth sits at the dance end of that sound. The Museum of Youth Culture describes it through bands such as VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk and Covenant, and through neon and fluorescent colour, synthetic hair falls, goggles and gas masks.
We do not sell hair falls, goggles or fluorescent separates, and we would rather say so than pass off a mesh top as cybergoth. What we do carry is the hardware that crosses over: straps, buckles and rings. Our guide to wearing a body harness shows how to put one over black without it reading as fancy dress.
How to wear 90s goth fashion now
- Wear one line per outfit. Velvet and a chain choker and a plaid mini and a satin slip is four different 1990s arguing in one mirror. Pick the romantic, the club, the mall or the witch, and let the outfit belong to it.
- Let one piece date it. A velvet choker, a fishnet top, a studded choker or a satin slip carries the decade on its own. Keep everything around it plain and black.
- Borrow a character only when she dresses in real clothes. Anjelica Huston played Morticia in The Addams Family in 1991, and our Morticia Addams outfit guide turns that long black line into something you can walk in.
- Choose the shoes last, once the outfit is settled. Our goth shoes guide covers platforms, creepers and Mary Janes.
90s goth outfits in plus sizes
The ranges on this page are uneven, so here they are in one place:
- Black Goth Scene Bustier Top, S to 6XL.
- Grunge Plaid Mini Skirt, XS to 5XL.
- Black PVC Leather Skirt, S to XXXL.
- Velvet Grunge Long Sleeve Dress, S to L.
- Gothic Lace Skirt, M to XL.
- Ribcage Tee, S to XL.
- Courtney's Gothic Fishnet Top, Lace Strap Satin Dress and Grimmaximum Black Buckle Trouser, S to L.
- Both chokers, the fishnet stockings and the earrings have no size.
That means the club look can be built in full above XL, with the bustier over the PVC skirt. The mall look reaches XL with the tee over the plaid mini, and above XL the plaid mini and the choker work with the bustier instead. The romantic look stops at L, and the witch look reaches XL only if you build it on the lace skirt. The skirt and trouser listings give waist and length in centimetres, so measure a skirt or pair of trousers you already like and compare before you order. Our plus-size goth guide compares where other independent brands stop, and our plus-size collection holds more pieces in larger sizes.
Frequently asked questions
What is 90s goth fashion?
It is the black, textured style goth wore as it moved from the underground into wider view during the 1990s. It covered several looks at once: romantic velvet and lace, fishnet and PVC for the clubs, mall goth bought in chain stores, witchy slip dresses, and cybergoth with its neon and hair falls.
What is the difference between 90s goth and mall goth?
Mall goth is one strand of 90s goth, not the whole of it. The name refers to the look as sold in shopping-centre chains such as Hot Topic, which opened its first shop in a California mall in November 1989. Club, romantic and cybergoth styles ran alongside it.
Which films shaped 90s goth style?
The ones we would name are The Addams Family (1991), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Interview with the Vampire (1994) and The Crow (1994) for the romantic and club looks, and, for the witchy end, the two witch films of 1996 and 1998, The Craft and Practical Magic.
How do you dress 90s goth today?
Settle on one of the decade's looks, dress in black basics you already wear, and add a single period detail, perhaps chains at the neck or fishnet on the arms. Plain surroundings are what stop that detail reading as a costume.
Can you wear 90s goth in plus sizes?
Yes, though ranges vary by piece. At The Cursed Closet the bustier top reaches 6XL, the plaid mini 5XL and the high-shine faux leather skirt XXXL, which covers the club look in full. The velvet dress and satin slip stop at L, so check each listing's measurements before you order.
