A goth winter outfit is built in three layers: a thin, close base, a middle layer that carries the texture, and one outer layer that sets the outline. Keep the bulk away from the waist, choose your tights by the hem you are wearing, and let the coat end clearly above or clearly below the skirt.

Winter is where a dark wardrobe either holds its shape or vanishes under a borrowed puffer. The pieces are rarely the problem. The order is. This guide gives the order, using pieces we sell now, most of them in our winter collection. Several cost more above the smallest size, so every price is given size by size, as it stood on 1 October 2026.

Quick Answer

To layer a goth outfit for winter, start with a thin fitted base, add one textured middle layer (a knit, a blouse or a corset), then finish with a single coat. Only one of the three should be big. Wear lined tights under short hems, and keep the coat hem well away from the skirt hem.

How do you layer a goth winter outfit?

In three layers, each with one job. The base sits against the skin and should be the thinnest thing you own. The middle layer is the one people see indoors, so it carries the lace, the knit or the lacing. The outer layer is the outline people read from across the street.

Only one layer gets to be big. A slouchy knit under a fitted coat fights at the shoulder, and the waist goes missing. If the knit is the big piece, the coat over it has to be roomy or cropped.

What do you wear under a corset in winter?

A thin, fitted, long-sleeved layer with a high neck. A thick knit under the boning bunches, and it adds width exactly where the corset is meant to take it away.

Solace's Chic Black Turtleneck Bodysuit is the piece for this: an opaque black body with a high neck and sheer, gathered sleeves. Because it is a bodysuit, there is no hem to ride up under the lacing. It is $30.44 in S and $33.06 in M and L. Anything from our corsets collection then goes over it.

If you would rather wear the knit, reverse the order: knit first, then a wide corset belt over it at the waist.

What do you wear under a sheer blouse?

An opaque black layer cut closer than the blouse, so the sheer fabric reads as a veil over a solid line. In winter that means the long-sleeved base again, not a camisole.

Our Mesh Blouse is a button-through mesh shirt with a solid collar, placket and cuffs, in black or purple, in sizes S to 2XL. It is $33.06, except the black in 2XL, which is $30.44. Worn open over the turtleneck bodysuit, it is a third layer that adds no bulk.

Which knit, and where should it end?

Choose the knit by where its hem meets your waistband. The Black Sweater is a plain black crew neck that reaches the hip on our model, who is 5'6" and wears S. Leave the hem out over trousers or a long skirt. It is $37.04 in XS/S and $51.99 in M, L and XL.

The Duo Knitted Sweater, in broad black and grey stripes, is cut short and ends above the waistband on the same model. Wear it over a high-waisted skirt or a long dress, where the waist stays in view. It is $30.58 in XS/S and $33.95 in M, L and XL.

A dress can be the middle layer too. The Eternal Black Dress has long sleeves and a high neck, falls to the ankle on our model, and is crossed by buckled straps at the waist and hip, which do the work a belt would. It is $44.19 in XS/S and $90.99 in M, L and XL.

Which tights work for a goth winter outfit?

Match the weight on the leg to the length of the hem: the shorter the skirt, the more the tights have to do. Three options, lightest first.

  • Fishnets over a solid pair: A net is mostly holes, so in winter it goes on top of something. The Cozy Beige Thermal Tights are listed for exactly that, worn beneath fishnets, in two weights the listing calls Middle 200g Plush ($30.44) and Thick 300g Plush ($33.06). One size.
  • Lined tights that look sheer: The Warm Winter Gothic Tights are listed as thick thermal tights with a fleece lining, and they photograph like ordinary black sheers. One size, $29.27. This is the pair for a short skirt under a long coat.
  • Lined leggings: The Black Goth Winter Leggings have a leather-look outside and a lined inside, and run from S to 4XL: $31.02 in S and $34.51 from M to 4XL. With a hip-length knit they are the outfit.

Our goth accessories guide goes through the rest of the hosiery, along with gloves and belts.

Where should a gothic coat end against a skirt hem?

Well above the skirt hem or well below it. A coat and a skirt that stop within a few centimetres of each other look like an accident from any distance.

The Long Coat shows the first answer. It is black faux leather edged in faux fur at the collar, down the front, at the cuffs and around the hem. On our model it stops at mid-calf, and a long black hem runs on to the ankle beneath it. That band of black below the coat keeps the line long. Over a short skirt, the same coat covers the hem completely and the tights do the rest. It is $115.69 in XS/S and $232.70 in M, L and XL.

The Short Coat works from the other end. It has a faux-leather body, faux-fur sleeves and collar, and ring hardware across the chest, and it stops around the hip. A short, wide jacket wants a long, narrow line below it, so pair it with the Eternal Black Dress or a maxi skirt, not with a full skirt that ends at the knee. It is $65.79 in XS/S and $154.20 in M, L and XL.

Both are in our jackets and coats collection. For how independent makers compare on outerwear, read our guide to goth jackets and coats.

What finishes the outfit at the head, neck and feet?

Small pieces at the edges. The Skull Fringe Winter Scarf is black and white, knitted with rows of skulls and finished with a long fringe. Its listing gives 210 cm by 20 cm, narrow enough to wrap the neck without adding width at the shoulder. It is $19.99. The TCC Logo Beanie is plain black with our logo embroidered on the cuff, $31.18. Where a coat sleeve is wide or trimmed in fur, a knitted arm warmer beneath it gives the wrist a clean edge, and our guide to gothic arm warmers and arm sleeves covers the styles.

At the feet, a tall shaft closes the gap below a midi skirt. Our guide to goth boots for women compares the makers.

Three goth winter outfits from pieces we sell now

The column: Eternal Black Dress, The Long Coat over it, the lined sheer-look tights underneath, the skull scarf at the neck.

Corset weather: The turtleneck bodysuit, a corset over it, a maxi skirt or the lined leggings, and The Short Coat on top.

The knit day: The Black Sweater, the lined leggings and the beanie. In autumn this is the whole outfit, so it doubles as a goth fall outfit. Add The Long Coat when the weather turns.

The knits, The Short Coat, the dress and the beanies are all in our winter collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear fishnets in winter?

Yes, as the top layer on the leg. Put a solid pair of tights on first and pull the fishnets over them. A skin-tone pair underneath keeps the look of bare leg behind the net, and a black pair turns the net into texture.

What is a good goth fall outfit?

A winter outfit with the coat left at home. Let a black knit be the outermost piece, wear lined leggings or tights below it, and add boots. Goth layering in autumn is the same order with one layer fewer.
